The Guest Speaker

Today's class was probably my favorite out of the year so far. hearing Dr. Burton speak about Dostoevsky, and existentialism was really interesting. looking back on my reading of Crime and Punishment I noticed that indeed I was feeling what the author had wanted me too, the scene with the beating of the horse sticks in my mind as having almost made me physically ill. Dr. Burton really helped me to understand Dostoevsky as well as Crime and Punishment. I would really like it if he could come back so that we could finish our discussion with him (sometimes I really hate the bells).

Raskolnikov's Sin

Raskolkikov does admit that he has that what he has done is bad, he admits it to Sonya not long before he confesses. despite this, Raskolnikov still tries to rationalize what he has done. Even while in prison Raskolnikov is still trying to rationalize and find out where he went wrong with his "superhuman" theory.

Mere Christianity

The excerpt from Mere Christianity that I really enjoyed was, "According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti_God state of mind. (Lewis 122).
